Chapter 1

What Is Hypnosis Anyway?

Hypnosis is a word that is confused by many...

Stage hypnotists, Hollywood films, tales of people with Svengali like magic powers, Mind control etc...

The real ‘Mind Control’ with hypnosis is Your Mind.

You having more control over your mind and thinking. That allows you to direct your actions, behaviour and ultimately your life.

The Truth is Hypnosis is Natural and Safe.

‘Trance States’ are something we go in and out of everyday.

We’ve all ‘zoned’ out during a conversation. You know when you’ve become focused on our own thoughts and completely oblivious to the world around you. Reading a book you suddenly realise you have been staring at the same paragraph but not actually reading. Waiting for the lights to change... they do but you don’t.

Then you suddenly ‘snap’ out of it. You were in a daze... a trance... call it what you like, you weren’t all there.

So, you might be nodding your head or identifying with some of these things, right? Of course, we all do it.

You could look at Hypnosis as a guided version of this trance state. You’re in control... more so in fact.

A question I hear all the time is:

“What’s the difference between Meditation & Hypnosis?”

I prefer to rephrase it as what similarities are there between the two...

Meditation... sometimes associated with sitting cross-legged, chanting ‘Om’, incense, candles, statues of Buda and things of that nature.

Hypnosis... sometimes associated with stage performers, hypno-darts from the eyes, swinging watches, (dose anyone ever really use a pocket watch to hypnotise anymore?)

The fanciful swinging of a watch is about ‘fixation’ of the attention. Stage hypnotists or practitioner performing direct hypnosis will have a person fixate their attention... then direct the person with suggestions to close their eyes, relax their body, etc.

Hypnosis and meditation take us from our daily lives to somewhere different... a place to grow and improve our lives.

Hypnosis is focused on achieving end goal... usually. e.g.

Weight-loss, giving up smoking, removing fears and phobias... or things like more confidence, motivation. change work like goal setting and the enhancing of abilities.

While meditation is normally associated with relaxation and enhancing spiritual connections etc...

MEDITATE: to contemplate, to reflect upon

HYPNOSIS: A state of focused attention

They go both ways...

There are hypnosis sessions that explore ‘Big Mind’, the space beyond...

And meditations about releasing anxieties and fears.

There really are no set boundaries... and if there were, we would want to explore what was on the other side of the boundary anyway, right!

Chapter 2

There is no such thing as Hypnosis... Everything is Hypnosis

There are no special or ‘magic word’ with hypnosis. They are all the same words we use daily...

Information ‘goes in’. In order for you to understand something you must have first read, heard, seen or experienced it in some way.

Your conscious minds then makes decisions about what you just heard or saw and it influences you in some way.

Think about this... a lecture vs film.

During a lecture you are being presented information and you may or may not agree with everything the lecturer says.

Watching a film or reading a story book there is no ‘critical mind’ making judgments about whether it’s true or not, the ideas just go in your unconscious mind...

Has Anyone Ever Told You Something and You Believed Them?

Well of course they have and of course you did.

A friend of yours may tell you that a certain book or film is great and you believe them... you may even tell others that this is supported to be a great film and you’ve never even seen it. But you believe the person who told you.
They offered a suggestion and you accepted that suggestion.

A hypnotist will offer a suggestion that smoking is bad, the suggestion is accepted and the person stops smoking.

A close friend telling you that a film is good and you believing that suggestion and a hypnotist suggesting to you that feeling confident is good and you accepting that suggestion are basically the same.

A competent hypnotist will know how to pitch the suggestion just right so that it is accepted... so too will a salesperson.

We are all using hypnosis on each other all the time... whether we realise it or not. Even when we do not verbally respond we are still communicating volumes.

Monkey Mind and Wormtongue Ear.

If you find it difficult to quieten your mind during meditation...

If you wake up and find it difficult to go back to sleep because your mind is racing...

Its called Monkey Mind. A Buddhist term meaning, unsettled; restless... a chattering out of control mind.

But even worse...

If you look in the mirror and criticise your appearance or achievements...

If you give yourself a ‘hard time’...

You could have: ‘Wormtongue Ear’!

I call it ‘Wormtongue Ear’ after the vile character from Lord of the Rings, Gríma Wormtongue.

Grima Wormtongue is the chief advisor to a King, but he’s is really working to weaken the King and his kingdom... through lies and persuasion whispered into the Kings ear.

Worse than incessant chattering of Monkey Mind is Wormtongue Ear! What are you telling yourself...

An internal dialogue that is anxious, worried, frightened, or puts you down and limits you from achieving your dreams.

Wormtongue Ear can even manifest as a negative internal dialogue you don’t consciously notice... so deep that it affects your self-esteem, confidence and More.

Chanting Om and mantras, focusing on your breathing all help to quieten your internal dialogue, (when you are focusing on your breathing and chanting there isn’t much room left to criticises yourself).

The problem is this takes a lot of discipline, not to mention time.
Hypnosis achieves results faster because of its directed approach.

Solution focused hypnosis and NLP can make changes in minutes that last a lifetime. Quitting smoking, overcoming aeroplane or snake phobias for example.

Other things like gratitude, self-image, motivation are a lifelong things... that should be effortless and fun.

Sustained results with exercise require continued practice. A continuing competence in playing piano requires continued enjoyment of playing the instrument.
Your levels of creativity, gratitude, confidence are a continuing thing on your journey through life.

Hypnosis helps make change quickly and enjoyable as you relax into a refreshing trance...
Normally in the healing state of Theta.

Deep Theta Healing

Brainwaves differs by their frequency.
Beta Brainwave is the state of normal waking consciousness.
Alpha is the creative ‘flow’ state, as psychologists call it.
Theta Brainwaves are associated with deep meditation and healing.
And Delta is the deep unconscious sleep at night.
The Theta Brainwave is the perfect state for accelerated learning and change. Inside the Theta state healing occurs.

Theta brainwaves are connected with the dissolving of stress. Promoting a healthy Mind and Body.
Stress is the biggest factor in damaging the immune system.
Increases in Cortisol (the stress hormone) can cause weight gain,
repeated exposure to cortisol actually damages you DNA.

Entering the Theta brainwave state helps optimise your immune system and promotes healing in the mind and body.

When in the Theta brainwave state, both your body and mind experience enhanced rejuvenation, growth, and healing.
Theta is used to facilitate a whole body/mind ‘Holistic’ healing experience.
The Mind and Body are inextricably intertwined. The thoughts we think shape our behaviour and the health of our DNA.

The health of our DNA can be measured scientifically by measuring telomere length.
Telomeres are like the end cap of DNA strands (imagine the protective plastic tips that covering the ends of shoelaces). Just like your shoelace, your DNA would unravel at the ends without them.

And unravelling DNA is far worse for you than tatty shoelaces!
Less healthy people have shorter telomeres.
Healthier people have longer telomeres.
Scientist conducted a study on the power of the mind to heal measuring telomere length.

What the scientist found is that the people practising deep mindfulness meditations maintained the length of their telomeres. While the control groups telomeres length decreased (as is normal).
There are many studies showing the biomarkers of health increasing from the use of hypnosis.

Meditation and hypnosis increase the production of an enzyme called telomerase. This preserves the length of telomeres.
Cortisol the stress hormone increases inflammation and actually damages DNA.

Basically:

Telomerase is good for your health.
Cortisol is bad for you.
Hypnosis before the invention of chemical anaesthetic was used in hospitals.

A Brief History Of Hypnosis

Some Historical Figures of Hypnosis Legend

Franz Anton Mezmer.

A Physician in the late 1700’s who coined the term ‘animal magnetisms’. Mezmer used trance states to heal people. He is also where the word ‘mesmerism’ and ‘mesmerize’ come from.

James Braid.

A Scottish surgeon 100 years later developed ‘mesmerism’ and called it ‘Hypnosis’. This was the first time the word ‘Hypnosis’ was used.

Milton H. Erickson

Erickson, another doctor, pioneered a conversational or indirect style of hypnosis which became known as ‘Ericksonian Hypnosis’.

This was a paradigm shift in the understanding and use of hypnosis.

Gone was the swinging back and forth of the watch, mesmeric passes and hand gestures or the direct ‘authoritarian’ hypnosis. is the kind of hypnosis a stage performer’s might use. This directed form of hypnosis has the ‘power’ being very much attributed to the hypnotist.

Indirect Hypnosis is an amazing way to bypass the critical thinking part of the brain introducing positive new ideas and strategies.

Hypnosis is a way to: gain more control over your emotions, gain more control over your thoughts and behaviours and bring out hidden talents, new ideas, abilities and more.

It’s a way to change your limiting beliefs and shortcomings and become a better you.

Chapter 3

Who Else Uses Hypnosis?

You’re in great company...

Hypnosis has come a long way since the word ‘Hypnosis’ was first used. Some of the words biggest movers and shakers use hypnosis.

In Science...

Albert Einstein physicist and Nobel Prize-winner was known for regularly using hypnotherapy to aid in developing his scientific approach and to access deeper states of creativity.

Einstein used trance-states to hone and develop his ideas. He also claimed to be able to“dream while awake”. It is rumoured that he came up with the theory of relativity in hypnosis.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them,”

The world of Acting.

Academy award-winning actress (and highest paid actress in the world), Julia Roberts, James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader and Mufasa in the Lion king) and Bruce ‘die-hard’ Willis all used hypnosis to overcome stuttering issues. Success there.

Actors, addiction and hypnosis.

Samuel L. Jackson, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Ellen DeGeneres all used hypnosis to quit smoking. Even the UK Prince Harry used hypnosis to quite smoking.

“The greatest decision I ever made in my life.” Matt Damon.

Orlando Bloom was so addicted to chocolate as a child his mother engaged a hypnotherapist to help him quit the addiction and shape up. Geri Halliwell (former Spice Girl), Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York) also used hypnosis for weight loss.

In Sports.

Tiger Woods started seeing a hypnotist in his teens to help him to block out distractions, quiet his mind, release any anxiety, and become and achieve incredible levels of success in golf. Michael Jordan used hypnosis in training

and would practice self-hypnosis before each game to give him laser-sharp focus and increased mental stamina.

Hypnosis is effective and fast as making changes and you can do it to yourself too.

Using Hypnosis

Self Hypnosis

Self hypnosis can be successfully used for relaxation, finding solutions to problems, becoming more creative... basically anything you want.

The important part is the Intention you set at the start.
Simply put, if you ask yourself questions like: “I am relaxing into this hypnosis experience to allow myself to become _______”* you direct your unconscious mind toward that. Any hypnosis session is stronger with a great intention before you start.

*This could be more confident, happier, healthier, fitter etc.
Set an intention.

The frame, point of view, reality tunnel, the expectation you bring to it (call it what you want), is the first and most powerful of all the suggestions.

Get clear on what you want... Then use hypnosis.

That intention you set should be well formed. Call it a goal or an achievement the most important thing is the direction.

Where are You are headed?

Following a path, moving towards achieving a goal or outcome. Starting from where you are and aiming at where you want to go.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Create Real Powerful Change.

From the Meta Discipline NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) come a series of Four simple conditions, criteria, or aspects that if you aline create magic.

The NLP Conditions of Wellformedness...

#1 State your intention only in the positive and as though it happening or happened.

#2 Ask yourself is this something in your control, something that you can do?

#3 Is it Holistic, is it good for all of you?

#4 A clear mental image and more... Sensory Rich.

If you follow these four simple steps your chances of getting what you want are exponentially increased.

Number One

Make sure you’re stating your intention only in the positive and as though it happening or happened.
Certain goals or intentions have to be reimagined, or stated in the positive. A statement about something you can do.

i.e. I want to be thin and healthy (not I don’t want to be over weight).

Forget what you don’t want, it only focuses your mind on that... DON’T think of a blue elephant with a green goblin with a pointy hat. See, you thought of, or started to think of the goblin on the elephant right?

Step 1 is always what DO you want?

Number Two

Ask yourself is this something that you are capable of doing?

An achievement you can succeed at. i.e. I want to remain calm when s/he says unpleasant things (not I want s/he to stop saying unpleasant stuff).

You can’t control other people, but you can control your own behaviours and reactions to them.
That’s kinda like cheating... in a cool way.
Talking positively about something you know that you are capable of doing or achieving*

This is where you turn “I want to manifest a million dollars” vagueness into a positively phrased intention about something you know you can do. Something that would get your started and on your way to earning/ manifesting/investing/creating wealth to the chosen value. i.e Seven Figures.

Number Three

Is it Holistic, is it good for all of you?
If you relentlessly pursue this goal with all of you time it could negatively impact on other areas of your life.

Working all the hours you can to make money, how will that impact on your health, social life, family time, etc?

How much dose it positively affect your health?
How much dose it improve your levels of wealth?
How much dose it increase your enjoyment of social time?
And so on...

If it will leave you broke perusing an artistic goal, or lonely perusing a fanatical its not good for you.

Step three from this NLP formula requires it to be good for all of you. In harmony, alined, holistic...

Number Four

You’ve already been doing a little of this... when you positively phrased your intention you starting imagining it, right?

Step four is about imagining it, in bright vivid, colours. With some details and with the good feelings you’ll get from succeeding.

Imagining being there, having already achieved it. What will it look like...

Getting a clearer mental image.

Let’s be a clear, ‘Mental Image’ also includes how it makes you feel and the way you talk to yourself about it, the way it sounds when you've achieved it.

Maybe if your a chef you’ll want to go deep on the way it tastes.

If aroma-massage is your thing in your ‘mental image’ add the smells you’ll smell.

Fully sensory rich imagination.

Explore all the details of the feelings, the images, tastes, sounds and aromas of you having achieved. And the more you imagine yourself doing things to achieve the more you’ll embed it deep inside your mind before you relax into Hypnosis.

Wellformed Outcomes

#1 State your intention only in the positive, (as though it is happening or has happened).

#2 Ask yourself is this something that you can do, something you can achive?

#3 Is it Holistic, is it good for all of you?

#4 Can you see it in your minds eye... hear it in your minds ear.. feel it in your body... feel how good it is and know you will create it.

If you answer yes to all four questions above that is a well formed out come, in NLP Speak.

And a Powerful intention indeed.

Setting an intention that strong before Hypnosis... just think about that for a moment...
